DirectX tutorials?

I'm completely new to DirectX and I was wondering if someone could give me
some links to tutorials. What I'm looking to do would basically be 2D
animation, I guess. I mostly want to take an image that I will compose
myself and overlay some animation ("sprites," as we called them in ye
olden days, right?) on that screen. And play some sound. Pointers?

Duh, I should have mentioned that I'll be using C# and .NET 2.0. The
tutorials could be in VB, though (as if).

It gives DirectX tutorials for C++, C# and VB.NET as well as XNA tutorials for C# which is the direction in which
Microsoft would like you to go today. If you do go the XNA route then there's loads of resources over on
http://creators.xna.com/
